The latest Packaging Federation report on the UK packaging manufacturing industry says productivity as a measure of sales per employee increased by over 10 per cent between 2000 and 2001, but at the expense of lower employment and reduced margins.
PF chief executive Ian Dent comments: “Although there are some negative trends, especially the increasing level of imported empty packaging, the sector is still a dynamic, innovative industry. It is imperative that the positive as well as the negative issues are put over to the opinion formers, such as Ministers and MPs, to gain maximum support for an industry that is part of a vital supply chain to the UK food and drink industry, as well as much of UK manufacturing.
“There is strong evidence that as UK manufacturing is doing more with less, the current paradigm for decoupling production and consumption indicators appears to be positive.”
