Sun Chemical, acpo develop coated films for web and label market

Sun Chemical, along with acpo, will exhibit expanded offering at this year’s Labelexpo event in Belgium to promote smart and cost-efficient solutions for narrow web, flexible packaging converting.

The event will take place from 25 to 28 September in Brussels.

Both firms have collaborated in the last year to provide high barrier transparent packaging and ultra-high barrier metalized (foil replacement) films for the brand owners and flexible packaging converters.

The companies have worked together to develop coated films for the narrow web and label market.

Through combining acpo’s self-wound films and Sun Chemical’s SunBar Aerobloc oxygen barrier coatings, the label printer with a lamination unit can print and convert films into pouches, bags or roll stock, for packaging oxygen sensitive products, such as nuts, snacks, nutrition bars, meat, cheese, spices and pet food.

Aerobloc oxygen barrier coating, which can be directly coated onto acpo film, is chlorine free, easy to recycle and resistant to flex cracking.

The coatings can be easily over printed with inks and then laminated on to a variety of secondary films.

At present, one acpo coated film is available with SunBar Aerobloc oxygen barrier coatings and palns are underway to expand the coated barrier films product line.

Sun Chemical functional coatings product manager Michel Vanhems said: “We’ve been working with acpo for almost a year now supplying them with our SunBar Aerobloc oxygen barrier coatings.

“Following the success we’ve had coating and supplying various films for flexible packaging converters during this time, we are now delighted to offer coated films for the narrow web market.”

The acpo provides self-wound and over-laminate films to the narrow web label converters, while Sun Chemical produces printing inks, coatings and supplies, pigments, polymers, liquid compounds, solid compounds, and application materials.
