Global packaging firm Sonoco has introduced new closure option, dubbed SoftPeel membrane, designed for enhanced cut-finger protection and additional billboarding printable packaging space for cans.
The new SoftPeel multi-layered, paper-surfaced membrane, which also provides more natural look and feel than all-foil options, is said to offer a paper look.
The company said that the new membrane allows consumers to easily peel and proves to be softer to the fingers than its all-foil counterparts, especially full-panel aluminum closures.
Sonoco North America rigid paper containers general manager and division vice-president Jeff Tomaszewski said: “We’ve heard from both consumers and brand owners about the risks of cut fingers from traditional membrane closures, and have worked to address this in our membrane and end portfolio.
“Sonoco’s SoftPeel membranes provide safer and easier opening for consumers, while providing the same barrier protection for the packaged product. The paper-based, multi-layer membrane also offers a space for brands to add their logo or promotional messaging.”
Sonoco said it has created the new solution by leveraging its material expertise in flexible material converting and closure development.
Compatible with Sonoco’s composite cans, the SoftPeel membranes expands the company’s suite of membrane and full-panel aluminum solutions which also comprise low opening-force options, tamper-resistant closures and customizable embossed membranes.
The firm plans to initially make available the SoftPeel membranes in 401 (99mm) and 502 (127mm) diameters, with additional sizes under development.
