Israeli startup Solo Gelato has partnered with chocolate-producer Barry Callebaut to develop a Nespresso-style ice cream capsule system which can make instant fresh ice cream.
The new gelato capsule system has been developed with the help of Barry Callebaut and business startup accelerator MassChallenge.
In 2016, Barry Callebaut has joined MassChallenge as a founding member of its Swiss branch, alongside other major food industry companies including Nestlé and Givaudan.
Barry Callebaut said that Solo Gelato’s product, however, does not directly compete with any of Barry Callebaut’s offerings.
Barry Callebaut global sourcing head Massimo Selmo said: “MassChallenge not only gives us access to new product ideas and innovative solutions we might never be able to create in-house… we also get to know a talented pool of bright young people with an entrepreneurial spirit.”
Solo Gelato plans to spend the first half of 2018 in planning the details of its product launch while the second half will be focus on executing the market launch plan and introducing the product.
Barry Callebaut CEO Antoine de Saint-Affrique said: “MassChallenge is a unique opportunity for us to tap into open innovation and be the first to learn about potentially disruptive ideas for our industry.”
Barry Callebaut plans to showcase the Solo Gelato machine at Sigep 2018, the artisan gelato trade show, scheduled in January in Rimini, Italy.
