Sigpack Systems has supplied a “damage-minimising” packaging line to Edinburgh-based biscuit manufacturer Simmers, for packing its traditional “Nairn’s Oat Cake” range.
The machinery has been supplied during an extension to Simmers’ Edinburgh plant implemented to accommodate rising demand. Oatcakes are particularly brittle, placing tough demands on a system which must transfer them from an oven into an airtight, pillow pack wrap and thence into secondary packaging.
Oatcakes arrive from the oven 16 across and are gently reduced in a 2:1 system which transfers them to two four-lane downstream packaging machinery legs. They are then gently stacked into a vibratory system which provides a small buffer for downstream stoppages, also providing individual pressure control on the stacked biscuit columns.
From here they enter the ZZP4 magazine feeders and are then transferred to HMB pillow pack wrappers. The biscuits are very carefully stripped from a vertical stack by a programmable counting system, after which the pillow pack wrapper groups each stack in the chain, “providing an airtight pack every time”.
