Graphic Packaging International (GPI), through its UK unit, has collaborated with Two Sisters Food Group’s (2SFG) to develop new ovenable pizza carton tray.
The new carton with an ovenable tray insert has been designed for Marks and Spencer’s Detroit-style Deep & Loaded pizzas.
GPI key account manager Lauren Hutchinson said: “We were challenged to create an ovenable cartonboard tray that would achieve a crispy base and eliminate the possibility of superfluous melted cheese spilling over the edge of the pizza and into the appliance.”
The new packaging solution features easy-open tear strip to allow the consumer to easily remove the artisan-look outer carton and place the pizza along with the cartonboard insert tray into the oven.
The tray offers air circulation and moisture dispersal to ensure a crispy base while the package’s fold-up sides prevent cheese from entering the oven, GPI said.
Additionally, the tray is designed to remain dry and be strong enough to lift the pizza out from the oven, the firm added.
Hutchinson added: “Our collaborative development process with 2SFG has realised a final tray that is completely ovenable and can consistently deliver the perfect Detroit-style pizza.
“We’re extremely pleased with the end result, which offers the ultimate in convenience and reflects the takeaway experience for the consumer.”
Marks and Spencer is one of the 2SFG’s customers. Other customers include Aldi, Asda, Co-op, KFC, Lidl, Morrison's, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose.
