Codestream, from Fuji Hunt Photographic Chemicals, is a new invisible, microscopically thin coating that can be applied by the converter using existing flexo, offset and gravure presses anywhere on a pack and then imaged by laser energy at the end user to produce codes.
Codestream uses proprietary FujiFilm technology to provide unalterable marks on all types of substrates. Sales development manager Brad Phillips says: “When the aqueous coating is hit by the CO2 laser, a colour change is created. Simple to complex variable data can be written using low power, high speed laser energy. The coating can be marked even when protected by a PP outer surface layer – the laser passes through.”
Scott Clouston, vice president and general manager of Fuji Hunt adds: “We have seen very much interest here. We are very excited with the possibilities that it brings to the packaging, labelling and variable data marketplace. We see it as competitive with thermal transfer, inkjet and laser ablation.”
Compatible with most laser writing equipment currently on production lines, whether flood or spot coated, CodeStream is claimed to prevent data manipulation so that if alteration is attempted, the mark becomes tamper evident.
