International corrosion solutions provider Cortec has announced that its new water-based coating is capable of modifying transit and storage protection options for equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and owners.
Cortec’s new coating VpCI-391 is a single component system which does not require mixing. The coating can be applied via spray, brush, roll, or dip. It goes on white and dries clear, or it can be tinted to a specific color if desired.
Cortec claims VpCI-391 provides outstanding corrosion protection for indoor and outdoor applications and dries to a virtually unnoticeable thin, clear film.
This removable coating can be used for protection of both unpainted and painted surfaces along with prevention of divergent types of metal corrosion. It does not harm plastic, and overspray on plastic components is not a concern.
As a water-based coating, VpCI-391 comes with an advantage that it is much easier to use and clean up than solvent-based systems.
The coating can be easily removed from equipment surfaces using alkaline cleaners and it has a clear non-tacky appearance that makes it not necessary to clean often.
Traditional coating products like COSMOLINE or Tectyl are thick, heavy waxy and greasy and are untidy to use, difficult to remove, and do not leave a clean appearance. The special features of VpCI-391 make it an alternative to these traditional products. VOCs are less than 0.5 pounds per gallon (48 g/L).
The company claims its new coating protects metals from corrosion in many indoor and outdoor storage or transit applications, including heavy equipment, machinery, vehicles, piping, and structural steel. It can be used in locations with extreme climates in the world, like industrial and offshore environments.
VpCI-391 is gaining importance for transit protection of newly made equipment. It is sprayed over door handles, hydraulic connections, wheel hubs, chassis, or anywhere corrosion can be expected, ahead of shipment.
Cortec says the coating has been used for safe transport fire trucks, heavy equipment, and complex oil rig equipment, in addition to protect pipes and equipment from corrosion in outdoor storage yards.
