Unified Grocers, a wholesale grocery distributor in the western US has collaborated with Guiding Stars and Vestcom's healthyAisles and launched a nutrition labeling program for shoppers of independent grocery stores to enable them make informed decisions about healthy food choices.
The new shelf tag program allows shoppers to see foods at a glance that offer the most nutrition for the calories and identify their key health benefits. The tags provide consumers a zero to three-star nutritional rating for each product.
According to Unified, they identify the product attributes including heart healthy, low sodium, whole grain, good source of fiber, gluten free, organic, low saturated fat, or calcium smart and address individuals’ dietary or lifestyle needs.
In the coming months, Unified plans to roll out the program at more independent retailers’ stores throughout the West.
Guiding Stars director of brand and business development John Eldredge said the partnership helps supermarket shoppers to find healthy foods that fit into their lifestyle needs.
"This collaboration showcases Unified Grocers’ commitment to helping independent retailers make nutritious food shopping easy, practical and fun for consumers," Eldredge added.
