Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec Corporation) have signed an agreement to build a polycarbonate (PC) resin plant in China, at an investment of $1bn.
Sabic said the 260,000 metric tonne per year PC resin plant will be built in Tianjin, and is expected to be operational in 2015. The plant will use Sabic’s advanced polycarbonate technology using phosgene and Dichloromethane free process.
Polycarbonates, are thermoplastic polymers that are moulded and thermoformed to form packaging containers.
Sabic Innovative Plastics unit said it is also expanding production for polycarbonate resin and films at its existing factories in Shanghai and Nansha, Guangdong province in China. The company will also add a specialty extrusion line at its Nansha plant for optical grade Lexan and textured products in early 2011.
