MeadWestvaco (MWV) has unveiled a new medication package, Shellpak Renew designed to address the needs of the patients and pharmacists. The packaging features a tear-resistant, recyclable outer carton, an easy-slide blister and an integrated calendar for patients to track their medications.
The sustainable and easy-to-use Shellpak Renew packaging also contains improved adherence features including color-coded spine labels, to help differentiate among drugs and push buttons, which are supposed to be child-resistant. It has been developed based on MWV’s original Shellpak design and has a smaller footprint requiring less shelf space.
According to the company, the pack’s outer carton is made of its environment-friendly paperboard-based packaging solution Natralock that maximizes the use of recyclable materials and minimizes waste.
The medication packaging is currently being used in nearly 2,000 other retail pharmacies across the US and is expected to be launched at more than 3,600 Walmart pharmacies in summer 2012.
MWV said the development of Shellpak Renew is part of its proposal to create awareness and solutions for poor medication adherence, which can lead to worsening of disease, serious and avoidable health risks, increased hospitalisations and even death.
