Klöckner Pentaplast invests $51.8m in global film capacity expansion

German producer of rigid films Klöckner Pentaplast Group is all set to add to its global production capacity in Asia, the US and Europe with an investment of $51.8m. The expansion includes facilities in Suzhou, China; Cotia, Brazil; and Santo Tirso, Portugal.

The company will invest $15.1m in 1,200 metric tons (mt) of additional coating and laminating capacity at its Brazil manufacturing facility. The facility will produce Pentapharm alfoil PVdC-coated and Pentapharm ACLAR®-laminated packaging films.

Besides, Klöckner will also increase the PVC calendaring capacity by 12,000mt to serve the markets including pharmaceutical, food, print, card, and general-purpose thermoforming.

The coating and laminating capacity will commence in fall 2013 and calendering capacity will come online in spring 2014.

Klöckner will invest $7.2m in its Portugal production site in a new extrusion line, which is expected to commence in winter 2013. The new capacity will be used for food and consumer packaging applications.

At its Suzhou manufacturing facility in China, the company will invest $29.5m to increase its global shrink-films capacity by 6,000mt. The site is set to open in spring 2013 and will produce packaging films for the growing domestic Chinese market.

The first phase of operations will produce transverse-direction oriented shrink-label films.

The group is wholly owned by the Strategic Value Partners Investor Group.
