Bangladesh Textile and Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui has placed Mandatory Jute Packaging Bill 2010 in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) in Dhaka.
Provisions of mandatory use of jute packaging for supplying and marketing some products and proposals for some rules in this regards have been proposed at the bill to check environment pollution caused due to use of artificial packaging.
Section 4 of the bill has proposed the provisions that after enactment of the act, no person would be able to sell, distribute and supply some specific products in packaging other than jute packaging.
Formation of an eight-member advisory committee with Textile and Jute Secretary as chairman has been proposed in the bill for making recommendations on use, distribution, production and supply of jute packaging.
The Minister said that the bill was placed for making mandatory use of jute packaging in supplying and marketing some products to check environment pollution caused due to use of artificial packaging and also to ensure fair price to jute growers and diversify use of jute.
