Indian city imposes ban on plastic bags

The Delhi government has enforced a ban on manufacture, sale and use of plastic bags, which came into effect from 23 November 2012, in a bid to deal with the increasing rubbish problems in the city.

The government issued notification in October 2012, specifying that no person including shopkeepers, vendors, wholesalers, retailers and hawkers will be allowed to sell, store or use plastic bags for any goods supply.

Delhi also banned the use of plastic cover/pouch to pack magazines, greeting cards and invitation cards excluding plastic bags that are used for packaging food stuffs such as milk, cooking oil, flour and plastic cups.

Plastic bags for use, which have been specified under the Bio Medical Waste Rules, 1998, are also exempted from the ban.
