Dole’s subsidiary Dole Fresh Fruit has partnered with Market Street United and United Supermarkets in Amarillo and nine other Texas communities to test Dole FreshPack, a new plastic bag designed to extend the shelf life of bananas.
Dole Fresh Fruit communications manager Bil Goldfield said the trial run will be considered successful if FreshPack increases banana consumption in Texas, amarillo.com reported.
The two-pouch banana bag, which has been designed with microperforations, keeps the banana at a greenish-yellow up to six days longer without the need for chemicals.
The FreshPack reduces the oxygen concentration around the bananas, increases the carbon dioxide level and slows the ripening process. It has two pouches and enables consumers to open one side of the bag and save the other side for later.
