Consumer products companies in the US are looking for alternatives to plastic-based packaging, owing to factors such as changes in consumer preferences, rising petrochemical costs and increasing government regulation, a new study has revealed.
According to the Specialty Packaging Papers Special Market Analysis Study from RISI, paper-based packaging is creating new growth and investment opportunities for paper producers.
RISI mill intelligence director of packaging Michael Jones said there is opportunity for manufacturers who are already producing packaging paper grades and producers of graphic papers are also expected to benefit.
"Graphic paper manufacturers producing printing and writing grades are facing significant market headwinds as demand for those grades continues to decline. The specialty market offers them an opportunity to improve machine utilization rates and create new revenue streams," Jones said.
US-based RISI is owned by global company UBM and provides information for the global forest products industry.
