The Ministry of Health in China has issued a joint public health notice to ban the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in the production of infant feeding bottles in the country.
The Chinese government will prohibit the manufacture of feeding bottles containing BPA from 1 June 2011, while the import and sale of bottles containing BPA will be banned starting from 1 September.
BPA, an organic compound that is used to make polycarbonate plastic and other materials, may lead to premature sexual development in children. The chemical is used in the production of infant feeding bottles, tableware and beverage containers.
On 1 March 2011, the European Union (EU) has banned the manufacture of baby bottles containing bisphenol A (BPA) in all European countries.
