Asda has developed a new traffic light-based packaging system, which allows shoppers to see the different stages of ripeness for avocados, normally difficult to determine through conventional packaging.
According to the firm, clarity would be provided to customers in the form of new packaging, with green box indicating the fruit is ripe, pink indicating ‘not ripe’, while an orange box indicates some more time for complete ripeness.
A supplier reportedly measures ripeness using a grading machine from Netherlands-based Aweta to determine ripeness.
Asda, which introduced the boxed avocados in 30 stores, is reportedly following in the footsteps of Tesco that had introduced packaging to sell the fruit at the stage of ripeness desired by consumers.
Traffic-light packaging would be adopted nationwide later in 2012.
