Varian to equip proton therapy center at St Petersburg Center

Varian Medical Systems has entered into an agreement with Russia-based St Petersburg Center of Nuclear Medicine of the International Institute of Biological Systems.

Under the agreement, Varian Medical will equip a new two-room proton therapy center at the center.

The equipment order was placed by Owen Kane Oncology Equipment, which is supplying the system to the center in St. Petersburg.

The equipment order, which is valued at about $50m not including service, is expected to start delivery and nstallation of the equipment in 2014 and patient treatments are scheduled to begin in 2016.

Varian Medical Systems president and CEO Tim Guertin said the ProBeam system combines the company’s unmatched technology for intensity modulated proton therapy with advanced imaging, treatment planning, and information management capabilities.

Proton therapy is used to treat certain types of cancer more precisely and also provides advantages when treating tumors close to radiosensitive tissues.
