UC Irvine Medical Center selects ClearCount SmartSponge system

University of California, Irvine Medical Center has chosen ClearCount Medical Solutions' SmartSponge system.

ClearCount’s SmartSponge system utlizes radio frequency identification (RFID) platform which aids in verifying sponge counts and detects sponges if they remain in the patient.

The system also identifies each sponge used during surgery providing double layer of protection.

Apart from SmartSponge system, UC Irvine has also implemented ClearCount’s SmartWand-DTX to provide additional protection against retained sponges in its ambulatory and labor and delivery facilities.

UC Irvine Medical Center chief medical officer William Barron said the company believe that both count reconciliation and detection technology are critical parts of preventing retained surgical sponges.

ClearCount Medical Solutions chief executive officer David Palmer said the company is pleased to see UC Irvine demonstrate how RFID-based technology cannot only improve patient safety, but also productivity, within the OR.
