Smiths Medical secures contract to supply ViaValve Safety IV Catheters

Smiths Medical, a medical device manufacturer, has secured a contract with the US Department of Veterans Affairs to supply Jelco brand ViaValve Safety IV Catheters to the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center, New Mexico, US.

Built on the Jelco IV Catheter platform, ViaValve Safety IV Catheters contain a valve inside the hub which blocks the blood flow from the patient’s vein upon initial venipuncture. prevent unintended needlesticks.

Besides preventing unintended needlesticks, the Catheters also help to reduce the risk of blood exposure and possible contamination by maintaining a clean access site, preventing the transfer of blood-borne pathogens from patient to caregiver on soiled gloves, clothing, bedding and dressings.

Smiths Medical president Srini Seshadri said that the ViaValve Safety IV Catheter is the latest advancement in IV catheter safety.

"Our mission is to produce innovative medical products that promote patient, clinician and healthcare worker safety while supporting the best possible clinical outcome," Seshadri added.
