New scanner detects live cellular processes

Researchers at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), Spain, have designed and developed a biomedical scanner which can identify the malfunctioning of an organ before the malfunction produces an anatomical change.

The device is based on molecular imaging, a type of biomedical imaging capable of identifying live cellular processes.

According to researchers, the scanner allows earlier diagnosis of a possible anomaly, which can facilitate earlier treatment.

The scanner, which is in patent process, was successfully tested in experimental studies at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital.
