Medtronic and Aetna collaborate to control of Type II diabetes

Medtronic has joined forces with Aetna to target patients with Type II diabetes and offer them insulin pump assistance programs. The program is designed to improve patients' quality of life and enhance support for doctors to help create more value in the health care system.

All the eligible patients will receive targeted education, case management and other patient support to help control blood sugar, which also may lower their health care costs.

Aetna will use claims data to identify patients who may benefit from insulin pump therapy and Medtronic will reach out to their physicians to offer the Getting2Goal program, designed to help simplify insulin pump therapy.

Additionally patients benefit from StartRight, Medtronic’s comprehensive and personalized on boarding program to help increase success, confidence and engagement in transitioning to insulin pump therapy.

The program is expected to run for two years. Aetna and Medtronic will evaluate the rate of success in glucose control among participants and determine the impact of the program on overall health outcomes and medical costs such as reduced ER and hospital stays and optimized diabetes medication regimens.

Aetna national medical director for pharmacy policy and strategy Ed Pezalla said the company is working with health care companies in new ways to deliver value.

"The program is another step in creating a sustainable health care system that supports better health outcomes and lower costs for consumers," Pezalla added.
