Canada-based LED Dental, a wholly-owned subsidiary of LED Medical Diagnostics, reported that its VELscope Vx oral health screening device has received CE mark approval.
The VELscope Vx is an adjunctive screening device that is used in conjunction with the traditional head and neck exam to help locate and identify abnormal tissue that may not be visible to the naked eye, including oral cancer and premalignant dysplasia.
A recent study at the University of Washington showcased the importance of including a VELscope exam with the traditional head and neck exam.
Of the 620 low-risk patients that were screened, VELscope helped locate 28 lesions -including 5 cases of dysplasia – that were missed by the naked eye.
In addition, a report published in Cancer Prevention Research in 2009 showed how the VELscope’s tissue fluorescence can not only assist the clinician in assessing lesion margins during excision, but also help to reduce recurrence rates.
