Institut Curie to install Varian radiotherapy equipment

Paris based cancer center Institut Curie has ordered four radiotherapy treatment systems - three Varian TrueBeam systems and a Novalis Tx machine - from Varian Medical Systems.

The cancer institute has purchased the devices to replace the older and less capable machines, according to Varian.

Institut Curie radiation oncology head Alain Fourquet said the new machines will enable Institut Curie to develop techniques at its Saint-Cloud facility while extending the availability of treatments in Paris.

"TrueBeam will allow us to optimize dose distribution, positioning and throughput while opening the way to introduce more adaptive radiotherapy techniques to benefit our patients." Fourquet added.

Dr. Fourquet further said the new TrueBeam systems would also be utilized for clinical research.

TrueBeam has technical features such as synchronize imaging, patient positioning, motion management and can deliver dose four times faster than the earlier technology.

Novalis Tx is expected to help clinicians in radiosurgery by delivering more doses to brain tumors or small metastatic lesions throughout the body in just one to five sessions.

The new systems ordered in June and July, will be installed between the end of 2012 and early 2014.
