HOYA Vision Care acquires 3M’s safety prescription eyewear business

HOYA Vision Care has completed the acquisition of 3M’s safety prescription eyewear business.

Part of 3M’s personal safety division, the safety prescription eyewear business includes a line of frames, prescription lenses, and premium coating options in a custom-made solution.

It also currently provides safety prescription eyewear or frames in Latin America, Europe and Asia, in addition to the North Amercan markets.

The divested business reports sales of around $45m per annum.

The deal does not included 3M’s safety non-prescription eyewear business, which is referred as plano eyewear.

As the deal concluded, around 140 3M employees will join HOYA to support the business. The deal also included the acquisition of an optical laboratory facility in Plymouth, Indiana.

At the time of announcing deal, 3M personal safety division general manager and vice president Bernard Cicut said: “After a thorough strategic review, we have decided to exit the safety prescription eyewear business to focus on our core personal safety businesses.”

HOYA Vision Care CEO Girts Cimermans said: "HOYA's acquisition of 3M's established safety prescription eyewear business expands our customer reach and entry into an important new optical market segment for HOYA both in the U.S. and globally.  

3M provides personal safety solutions, comprising of respiratory protection, fall protection, hearing protection, and plano (non-prescription) eye protection.
