Hill-Rom Receives Gold Medical Device Excellence Award For Envision E700 Wound Surface

Hill-Rom Inc. has received a Gold 2009 Medical Device Excellence Award for the Envision E700 Wound Surface. The award recognizes excellence in medical device engineering and design. This is the third consecutive year that a Hill-Rom product has been recognized with this award.

The Envision E700 Wound Surface is a therapy system that not only reduces shear, friction and pressure, but also helps keep a patient cool, dry and mobile. Designed specifically to address the needs of patients who are at risk for skin break down, the Envision E700 Wound Surface is innovative in its design and offers features that help the care giving staff address patient needs.

The Envision specialty surface incorporates sensing and weight-based pressure redistribution technology, explained Jeff Kao, president of Hill-Rom’s North America Acute Care division. It brings together advanced technology in a new way to create a surface that is therapeutic and offers patient comfort. The innovation in this surface demonstrates Hill-Rom’s core commitment to enhancing outcomes for patients and their caregivers.

The Envision E700 Wound Surface has multiple layers of 3-D fabric (crush resistant channels) encased in a shear liner that shifts along with the patient, minimizing shear and friction during patient movement. It is combined with a unique algorithm that automatically adjusts the seat and back to reduce shear and friction when the head of the bed is raised. Microclimate management is accomplished through a unique approach that delivers low air loss through multiple layers of breathable, 3-D fabric with crush resistant channels increasing air circulation and flow beneath the patient. In turn, the high moisture vapor permeable, stain resistant cover improves the ability to manage heat and moisture directly beneath the patient. The product also offers PressureSmart Sensing Technology that senses the patient position in real time, allowing optimal pressure redistribution as the patient sleeps, turns, sits up and gets out of bed.

The Medical Design Excellence Awards competition, organized and presented by Canon Communications LLC (Los Angeles), is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. Entries are evaluated on the basis of their design and engineering features, including innovative use of materials, user-related functions that improve health care delivery and change traditional medical attitudes or practices, features that provide enhanced benefits to the patient, and the ability of the product development team to overcome design and engineering challenges so that the product meets its clinical objectives. A comprehensive review of the entries is performed by an impartial, multidisciplinary panel of third-party jurors with expertise in biomedical engineering, human factors, industrial design, medicine and diagnostics.

The 2009 Medical Design Excellence Award winners were announced and honored at a June 10 ceremony during the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East Conference and Exposition in New York.
