Carticept Navigator DS wins FDA approval

Carticept Medical has received the US Food and Drug Administration 510(k) approval for its Navigator Delivery System (Navigator DS) to treat joint pains.

The Navigator DS is a computer-controlled drug delivery system which prepares and delivers physician-prescribed injections from standard multi-dose anesthetic and steroid drug vials.

The Navigator DS is also integrated with the ultrasound screen which provides physician with real-time visualization of the needle position, fluid delivery process and prescription volume.

The DS system records the treatment data automatically after the injection is delivered and creates a record for transfer to an electronic record management system.

Myers Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center Primary Care Sports Medicine director Charles Garten said automating the manual steps of procedures will help improve patient care, increase efficiency and maximize patient throughput in the sports medicine clinic.

Carticept president and CEO Timothy Patrick said in addition to its use in sports medicine and orthopaedics, they believe the technology has future applications in anesthesiology, radiology and other specialties that require accurate dose delivery.
