Boston Scientific introduces new Captivator EMR device

Medical equipment manufacturer Boston Scientific has introduced new Captivator endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) device, which has been specifically designed for EMR in upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

The firm has developed the device as a minimally invasive alternative to an esophagectomy, a surgical procedure that removes part of the esophagus in upper GI tract cases.

Captivator EMR device is said to provide physicians with a 360 degree unobstructed peripheral view for more complete visualization of the diseased area when carrying resections.

The firm’s accessory devices such as the Resolution Clip and Interject Needle can be used with the device during the procedure to address the potential complications rapidly.

The Captivator EMR device is claimed to be the only EMR device, which includes a pathology kit to provide added convenience for endoscopists and pathologists.

Boston Scientific endoscopy president and senior vice-president David Pierce said: "As a leader in GI endoscopic devices, this launch complements our existing product offering for lower GI EMR procedures, and expands our portfolio into the growing upper GI EMR segment."

The firm also started a multi-center, prospective and post-market registry, which is designed to assess the performance of the Captivator EMR device for endoscopic resection of abnormal tissue growth called early neoplasia, specifically in Barrett’s esophagus.

Expected to complete in 2016, the trial will enrol around 300 patients at 16 clinical centers in eight countries.

The firm is making the Captivator EMR device available in the US, Europe, Singapore, Australia and Puerto Rico.

Earlier this month, Boston Scientific received CE mark approval for its Vercise Primary Cell (PC) Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) system to treat Parkinson’s disease (PD).
