Abdominal lumbar x-ray test detects cardiovascular events in CKD patients

Abdominal lumbar x-ray is said to help determine calcification thereby to identify risk for cardiovascular events in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients.

CKD patients have higher levels of phosphorus in the blood, which in turn causes increased calcification of the major arteries and heart valves which leads to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Patients detected with kidney disease are recommended to go for abdominal lumbar x-ray to identify calcification, to give way to a preventable scenario in most cases.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi Nephrology senior consultant Ashwani Gupta said lumbar X-ray of spine, which is routinely performed to identify stones in the kidney and Nephrocalcinosis, which can lead to renal failure in future, can also show vascular calcification especially in diabetic patients which are commonly seen.
