Bluestar Silicones Unveils Skin Adhesive Silicone Elastomers for Wound Care Applications

8 Feb 2010: Bluestar Silicones’ new line of skin adhesive elastomer gels provides gentle, non-irritating adhesion for a range of wound and skin-care applications. Silbione® silicone skin adhesives were launched at the Medical Design & Manufacturing West conference and expo 8-11 Feb in Anaheim.

Wound care is a growing market for silicones because of the material’s property profile and biocompatibility, according to Karen O’Keefe, North American healthcare market manager. Silbione® skin adhesives are two-part, platinum-catalysed silicone gel elastomers, manufactured in a clean environment to ensure healthcare grade levels of purity and quality. The materials are mixed and then coated onto a substrate. They are targeted for a variety of wound and skin care uses including wound dressings and bandages, transdermal patches for cosmetic and active delivery, medical and fashion tapes, and scar management.

These hydrophobic products enable gentle adhesion to dry skin without adhesion to moist skin, thus preventing secondary trauma to newly formed skin in a healing wound. Silbione® Skin Adhesives retain adhesion properties upon removal so they can be repositioned for several applications. They are gas permeable, allowing the skin to breathe, and may be washed and reused.

The materials are manufactured under tight specifications and feature high lot-to-lot consistency which eliminates the need to adjust processing equipment for each new lot. This enables the customer to achieve optimum processing and product performance for the targeted application and results in less waste and improved productivity.

Silbione® Skin Adhesives are available in a full range of probe tack values and viscosities ranging from 3,000 to 45,000 cps. With a wide selection of tack values, the desired tack can be achieved without having to adjust the formulation by off-ratio mixing.
