IBS 2010 – “Innovative Antimicrobial Thermoplastic Compositions”

From 14-18 September 2010 Lati S.p.A. presented a study entitled "Innovative Antimicrobial Thermoplastic Compositions" at the 14th International Biotechnology Symposium and Exhibition held in Rimini, Italy.   IBS 2010

This important event gathered together more than 1500 people from all over the world, aiming to explore new frontiers and applications of biotechnology for a more sustainable future, based on the world bio-economics and with a close co-operation between industry, academic research and governmental authorities.

The symposium was chaired by major experts with worldwide reputations and divided into nine sessions including Environmental, Medical and Pharmaceutical, Plant and Forest, and Food.

Oral presentations included relevant topics of global interest, such as:

  • Bio-engineering techniques
  • Functional genomics applied to plants
  • Bio-monitoring of waste and biofuel
  • Regenerative medicine

Our study raised an international interest in the Environmental biotechnology session since it was aimed to compare the antimicrobial activity of several additives added to structural thermoplastics such as our LATIGLOSS in order to limit the spread of hospital acquired infections (MRSA is the major cause).

The microbiological tests have been carried out in compliance with the strict International standard ISO 22196:2007, "Measurement of Antibacterial Activity on Plastic Surfaces", in order to obtain a reliable reduction in the microbial population when measured in comparison with the standard. In a nutshell, the outcome of this study showed that the most effective chemical element was copper (FDA approved) in comparison with silver (already known for its properties), zinc and barium. In particular, copper is known to express its action interfering with osmotic cell balance.

Finally, the mechanical characteristics as well as electrical and aesthetics were investigated and no significant detrimental effects were observed.

Last but not least, these materials have a long lasting antibacterial effect due to their in-mass formulation, considerably more durable than common surface treated items at standard condition of use.
