Unum appoints new vice president of government affairs

Tennessee-based insurer Unum Group has appointed Martin McGuinness as its new vice president of government affairs.

He will join the financial protection benefits company’s government relations team in Washington DC, later this month.

McGuinness will join Unum from the American Insurance Association, where he was the vice president of federal affairs.

Before that, he served as one of President George Bush’s top liaisons to the US House of Representatives with responsibility for developing and executing White House strategy on priority issues.

He also held in several legislative positions with various members of congress as well as a role as senior manager at Washington Council Ernst & Young.

McGuinness said federal legislation and regulation continue to have an increasing role in financial services, and I’m looking forward to helping Unum engage in Washington in a positive and productive way.

Unum senior vice president and chief government affairs officer Scott Maker said McGuinness has a solid understanding of both government relations and the financial services industry. His depth of experience and his insight into these sectors make him a fine addition to the team.
