Thailand to make health insurance buying mandatory for foreign tourists

Thailand’s Public Health Ministry is planning to enforce a new law that makes mandatory for any foreign tourist visiting the country to buy a travel and health insurance.

Various agencies of the country have agreed to the new proposed law.

Public Health minister Pradit Sinthawanarong was quoted by Bangkok Post as saying that charges for health insurance coverage might be added in visa fees of tourists.

For tourists with visa, cost of travel and health insurance coverage will be added in visa fees, whereas in the case of non-visa tourists, fees will be collected either at immigration checkpoints or included in the airline ticket.

Currently, the Thai government is offering free medical services to foreign tourists.

The new law could help the country in saving additional financial burden in the event of emergency care and return of dead bodies of tourists.
