Symetra appoints new vice president

Symetra Financial, a provider of employee benefits, annuities and life insurance services, has appointed Glenn Black as vice president and head of the company's tax department.

In his new role, Black will be responsible for Symetra’s tax planning and analysis, GAAP and statutory tax accounting, tax reporting and compliance activities.

In addition, Black will advise product development teams across the company on product taxation issues. He will report to Margaret Meister, executive vice president and chief financial officer, and will be based in Bellevue, Washington.

Black will join Symetra from TIAA-CREF where he led the corporate tax department and managed tax compliance, provisioning and planning. Previously held tax leadership roles at ING Americas, Transamerica Corporation and Unum Corporation.

Meister said Glenn has experience working in organizations with diverse product lines. He is familiar with all the tax laws pertinent to the industry, and he has been intimately involved in helping companies optimize their tax position.
