Behind the scenes of the Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn TV battle

The election is just days away. We wanted to know just how both Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn’s plans for the country will impact us and our businesses. So we went and met them.

There are so many influencers out there who inspire us. Compelo regularly speaks to them for you. But Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn have a lot more influence than most.

We asked MP Barry Gardiner what he thinks

Labour politician Barry Gardiner told Compelo: “I would like to ask Theresa May – do you sacrifice your economy to meet your immigration targets?”

Jeremy Corbyn in response to the recent terrorist attack on the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester said: “We need more police. We are pledging to put 10,000 more police on our street…we want a more secure future for all of us. This is a perversion of Islam.”

We ask a lot of top leaders and influencers about leadership skills. Corbyn said this about what kinds of leader he is: “Leadership is as much about using your ears as your mouth.”

Corbyn on Brexit

On Brexit: “We have serious skill shortages because we have not invested enough in education and training for a very long time. We won’t threaten Europe by making the UK a corporate tax haven. I can also personally guarantee that if we get in, we will protect maternity and paternity leave and other EU laws.”

What about for students and young millennials keen to climb both the career and housing ladders? “The younger generation should not be worse off than the ones who have gone before. We are better off when we are all better off, so I don’t think students should have to pay for university educations when their qualifications help all of us.”

What does Theresa May really think?

Theresa May on the police: “Its not about the number of police. It’s about what the police are able to do. Crime is changing. Of course the terrorist threat is severe. So we are putting extra money into tackling cyber crime.”

“Let’s make sure every child gets a good school place. Nobody can guarantee levels of funding, but we are putting more money into schools and the NHS.”

On leadership skills: “Sometimes you have to be difficult to do what’s right. If it takes being a difficult women to do what’s right for the country, then that’s what I will be. I’m being a difficult woman in ensuring we are negotiating hard.”
