Plantation company to utilise hydro power

Sri Lanka’s Madulsima Plantations said it plans to build a RS200M (US$2.8M) hydro power plant on its estates which could also supply power to the national grid. ‘We have approved the power plant as a project and are looking at various options to utilise the power,’ Lalith Obeysekera, Madulsima’s chief executive said. The plant, which is expected to generate about 4MW, would help meet the energy requirements of the company’s 12 estates. ‘If we can generate to full capacity we will sell power to Ceylon Elec-tricity Board, the state-owned utility,’ Obeysekera added. He declined to say how the firm would finance the project.

Sri Lanka’s generation capacity is about 1600MW and power demand is rising by 10% annually.
