Pakistan plans for dam on Taunsa Barrage

The government of Pakistan plans to construct a mini hydroelectric dam on the Taunsa Barrage, official sources in Dera Ghazi Khan have said. The proposal is said to have been approved by the Irrigation Department and work on the project started in August this year.

In another development, the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) government has entered into negotiations with Italy’s Impregilo for the establishment of a 72MW hydro power generation unit at Khan Khwar in Bisham District.

Sources say the project is likely to cost an estimated US$100M.
