The National Hydroelectric Power Corp (NHPC) in Faridabad, India has announced it is likely to implement projects in the northeastern region. These will include Manipur’s 90MW Loktak downstream project, for which environmental clearance is yet to be received, and the 510MW Teesta V project in Sikkim.

Meanwhile, North Eastern Electric Power has received approval from the Central Government of India to implement several hydro projects during the Ninth Plan period. They include: •Assam: Kopili stage II (25MW) and Lower Kopili (150MW); Tuirial (60MW) and Tuivai (210MW) — both believed to be under consideration by the North Eastern Council.

•Arunachal Pradesh State: Kameng (600MW) on the Kameng river. Originally an Indo-Australian private sector joint venture, the project may now be taken up by NEEPCO.
