India-based Larsen & Toubro has fully commissioned the 225MW Sikalbaha combined cycle power plant in Bangladesh which is owned by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).
The gas-fired power plant, which is set to begin commercial operations, is located in Sikalbaha near Chittagong in southeastern Bangladesh.
L&T was awarded a $200m contract in August 2014 by BPDB to provide design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the Sikalbaha power plant on a turnkey basis.
L&T-Sargent & Lundy, the joint venture of L&T and US-based Sargent & Lundy, carried out plant integration and detailed engineering of the Sikalbaha power project after being appointed as the project’s engineering consultant.
Germany-based Siemens provided the gas turbines, steam turbine and generators for the plant.
The Sikalbaha power project broke ground in April 2015 and was partly commissioned in May.
L&T whole-time director and L&T Power CEO & managing director Shailendra Roy said: “We are proud to be associated with Bangladesh authorities for the power project. Their thorough professionalism ensured that the project smoothly got off the ground.”
The company’s Vadodara-based Gas Based Power Projects Business Unit executed the project.
In March, L&T partly commissioned in Open Cycle the 360MW Bheramara Combined Cycle Power Plant Development Project in Bangladesh which is owned by North West Power Generation.
The Bheramara plant was the first gas-based project contract for L&T and was worth $280m.
The company has two more gas-fired project contracts in Bangladesh on hand which include the 400MW Bibiyana III Combined Cycle Power Project and the 400MW Bibiyana South Combined Cycle Power Project, both owned by BPDB.
For the Bibiyana South plant, L&T had won a $250m worth engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract in late November, in partnership with Samsung C&T Corporation.
Bibiyana South gas-fired plant will be constructed in Bibiyana Upzila in Hobiganj district, Sylhet division and is slated to be commissioned in May 2018.
