Kyrgyzstan’s biggest hydro plant starts operating

Kyrgyzstan has begun operating its largest hydro power station, located in the north of the country, according to Interfax. The station will generate a large supply of electricity for the north of the country and and the capital.

The World Bank has greatly facilitated construction of the plant and has been involved in financing the modernisation of Kyrgyzstan’s hydro power sector since 1997. Four hydro power plants have been built within the framework of the US$90M World Bank programme to upgrade the sector.

The station will have the ability to generate over 200M kWh of electricity a year, and cost US$11M to construct. Kyrgyzenergo invested US$1M in the project.
