Invitations imminent on Nechi

Potential investors are expected to submit proposals in the second quarter of the year for a 645MW hydro development in Medellin, Colombia.

Local utility Empresas Publicas de Medellin (EPM) has completed feasibility studies for two hydroelectric projects, Nechi (650MW) and Guaico (136MW). Funding shortages have kept both projects in abeyance but the possibility of using private financing to complete the plant appears to have revived hopes of carrying out the Nechi project. Engineering and design studies are complete and EPM is expected to invite potential investors to submit proposals soon.

The Nechi project comprises a 127m high concrete dam, penstocks and underground powerhouse, and is expected to cost some US$606M, over an eight-year construction period.
