Independent system operator given go ahead in New York

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has given New York utilities the go ahead for an Independent System Operator (ISO) — an action which will help move New York utilities towards a more competitive wholesale power market. Under the proposal, the New York Power Pool will be dissolved and its functions assumed by the New York ISO.

Once the ISO is operational, market participants will have access to unbundled transmission services across the systems of all eight transmission providers in the New York state.

The public utility members that filed the ISO proposal include Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Niagara Mowhawk Power Corporation and Orange and Rockland Utilities.
