German bids for Spanish company

German utility RWE has offered US$2.7B for the control of Spain’s fourth largest power company, Hidroelectrica del Cantabrico. Any acquisition needs approval from regulators in Spain.

RWE is expanding across Europe as the power industry deregulates and opens up for competition. It hopes to acquire Cantabrico to serve as an entry point into the growing Spanish electricity market.
