Cruachan contract win for VA Tech and GE

A consortium of VA Tech Hydro and GE Hydro has been awarded a contract by Scottish Power to refurbish and upgrade units 1 and 2 at the Cruachan pumped storage plant in Scotland, UK. Both units comprise a 130MW vertical radial pump-turbine.

The scope of work for va-tech-hydro comprises the design, fabrication, supply, installation and commissioning of the motor-generators and the refurbishment of the pony motors, with VA Tech Reyrolle UK acting as subcontractor for the refurbishment of the 3.3kV distribution switchgear.

ge-hydro is responsible for refurbishment, upgrade and replacement of the pump turbine components and main inlet valves, and replacement of the turbine governor system.

VA Tech Hydro is also carrying out a design review and studies to identify potential output, efficiency and dynamic response improvements.

The main purpose of the project is to increase power output by more than 30%, with only ten weeks outage time planned for both units.
