MHI Vestas Offshore Wind has completed installation of turbines at the 450MW Borkum Riffgrund 2 wind farm located 57km off the northwest coast of Germany.
Being developed 54km off the coast of Lower Saxony in the North Sea, Germany, the wind farm is jointly and equally owned by Orsted and Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP).
The firm said that the installation marks a significant milestone in its first German offshore wind project.
Scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2019, the offshore windfarm will have capacity to produce electricity to power approximately 460,000 German households a year.
MHI Vestas chief operations officer Flemming Ougaard said: “With the last V164-8.0 MW turbine now installed at Borkum Riffgrund 2, we look forward to the commissioning phase and to the future of offshore wind energy in Germany.
“In partnership with Ørsted, we are proud to contribute to the clean energy transition, with 56 MHI Vestas turbines powering more than 460,000 German households.”
As per the contract signed in January 2017, MHI Vestas has installed a total of 56 units of V164-8.0 MW turbines, each rated with a capacity of 8MW, at the wind farm.
The deal also includes a five-year full-scope service contract with an availability guarantee, ensuring optimized performance of the wind power plant with maximum power output.
MHI Vestas CEO earlier Jens Tommerup said: “The Borkum Riffgrund 2 project represents another significant milestone in the history of MHI Vestas, and it underlines the positive response from the market to both MHI Vestas and our game-changing V164-8.0 MW turbine, and we look forward to delivering this record breaking project together with DONG Energy.”

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind is 50:50 joint venture between Vestas Wind Systems and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).
