Chernobyl unit 4: Novarka and EBRD have got it covered

The New Safe Confinement in place. To clear protruding parts of the existing structure, it was necessary to include “tilting panels” (up to about 30 m long) in the eastern wall of the NSC that could be raised during the sliding operation and then lowered into position after the NSC has reached its final location. These panels have the same structure as the walls. They are tilted by winches and jacks and then locked into position by means of special hydraulic jacks and then sealed. One such panel, in the open position, can be seen in the picture (Photo, Novarka/EBRD)
