Best entrepreneur movies to make a dream a reality

Wall Street (1987)

This eighties classic explores the life of Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen), a blossoming stock broker keen to climb the career ladder. Unfortunately, and in a desperate attempt to impress his role model Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas), he naively shares details on insider trading. Thus, the film is ostensibly about the limits of greed. It also pits ambitious against morality, querying achievement at any cost.

Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

Additionally, this moving story searches the hefty price of success that some people are willing to pay. Based on the true story of Chris Gardner (Will Smith), Pursuit of Happyness studies the underbelly of ambition. However, unlike Wall Street, it exposes self-sacrifice, loss of dignity, and poverty in an ultimate bid for victory.

Nightcrawler (2014)

Conversely, this thriller explores opportunism in light of capitalism and ethical standards. It features freelance journalist Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal), who documents crime scenes in affluent LA after dark. Furthermore, Bloom is unapologetically corrupt in his strategy to be a leading source of photography from these violent events. He even goes so far as to include sabotage in ambitions. While entrepreneurs shouldn’t treat morality as a commodity, they must differentiate themselves from the competition in creative ways.

Joy (2015)

Similarly, but without the dark undertones, Joy focuses on Joy Mangano (Jennifer Lawrence), and her success through taking advantage of a seemingly random event.  Joy cuts herself through wringing a mop used on broken glass. However, she also inadvertently stumbles on an idea that will change her life forever. Loosely based on a true story, this narrative deals with the limitations and risks of being an entrepreneur. Furthermore, it highlights the power of persistence.

Erin Brockovich (2000)

Also based on a true story, Erin Brockovich tracks the resourcefulness and stubborn tenacity of one woman against a major conglomerate. Starring Julia Roberts, the character of Brockavich must pursue a power company accused by California residents of water pollution. Thus, as a single mother of three, Brockavich represents the entrepreneurial spirit of dogged determination at all costs.
