Research by Barclaycard has revealed that Turkey tops the league for overseas fraud on UK cards, closely followed by France, Spain and the US.
Barclaycard’s analysis shows that these four countries accounted for over 56% of all foreign fraud recorded by the company last year. The top ten fraud hotspots are Turkey, France, Spain, the US, Italy, China, Thailand, Ireland, India and the Netherlands.
Martin Warwick, head of Barclaycard fraud operations, said: I’m not surprised to see destinations popular with British holiday-makers at the top of the list – more tourists means more cards that can be lost or stolen.
As monitoring of fraud overseas increases, Barclaycard has introduced a service to help prevent customers having their card rejected in a foreign country. When customers let Barclaycard know their travel plans, its Falcon monitoring system can be updated to prevent fraud checks being made when foreign spending shows up.
